Selecting the appropriate plasterboard isn’t just about price—it’s about performance, longevity, and safety.
Standard 12.5 mm gypsum boards work perfectly for living rooms and bedrooms, offering a smooth finish that’s easy to tape and decorate. However, in high-humidity areas like bathrooms or utility rooms, moisture-resistant (green) boards are a must: their water-repellent core prevents swelling and mold growth. For fire-separation walls—between an attached garage and living space, for example—fire-rated boards (often coloured pink or purple) provide up to 60 minutes of fire resistance under testing. If noise dampening is your goal, acoustic or “sound-board” plasterboard features a denser core that cuts airborne sound transmission by up to 49 dB in single-layer applications. When you buy the right board from the start, you avoid callbacks, reduce waste, and end up with a wall system tailored to your exact needs.
Key Considerations:
-
Room environment: Moisture-resistant for damp areas; fire-rated for safety walls; acoustic for sound control.
-
Thickness & weight: Standard is 12.5 mm; thicker boards (15–18 mm) increase rigidity and fire performance.
-
Edge profile: Tapered edges simplify joint finishing; square edges suit concealed junctions under trims.
